Confluence
MC Confluence is a celebration of translation and interpretation that brings translators, interpreters, educators, students, and others who are interested in the field together to discuss the literary, practical, and philosophical dimensions of translation. MC community members collaborate with the National Capital Area Translators Association (NCATA) to offer the annual conference and other events to MC students and faculty.
The MC Confluence committee holds an annual professional conference that offers workshops and presentations in the area of interpretation and translation, panel discussions, networking, and career development. Throughout the year, the committee also provides the opportunity for students to get involved in the translation community, including an Open Mic celebration on International Translation Day.
The conference committee is grateful for the leadership and unwavering support of Dr. Sharon Fechter, Dr. Brad Stewart, and other members of the MC community. In addition, the committee would like to welcome Dr. Fiona Glade, Acting Campus Dean, and Ms. Jennifer Haydel, Acting Dean of Humanities Area. We would like to extend our appreciation to our Interim Vice President of Liberal Arts and Education, Dr. Sarah Campbell, who has supported this event and made it possible.

Poetic Pulse: Read, Discuss, and Create
A poetry reading, student-led panel discussion, & mini-poetry workshop with esteemed
poet and translator Dr. Nancy Naomi Carlson.
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Nancy Naomi Carlson. Dr. Carlson is the winner of the 2022 Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize. She is shortlisted for the Sarah Maguire Translation Prize, the Best Translated Book Award, and the CLMP Firecracker Award. She has been longlisted for the National Translation Award in Poetry. She was decorated by the French Government with the Order of Academic Palms (l’Ordre des Palmes académiques). The French Academic Palms recognizes her for eminent service to French education and has contributed actively to the prestige of French culture.

Living Between Languages; The Translator’s Territory/Predicament
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Nancy Naomi Carlson
Perpetually in the process of transition, the translator works in a circulatory, connective
space between languages, a "place" not a place but a process constituted by the openings,
opportunities and possibilities that link theory and practice, assimilation and homelessness.
At Confluence this year, we hope to examine the translator's experience as a lens
through which to discuss the many different fields and disciplines in which translation
is of paramount importance.
